A kind sister has shared her reflection with all of us. May Allah swt reward her and may He grant us knowledge that benefits, ameen!
The Intellectuals - Session 4: The Illustrious Life of Imam as-Shaafi'ee.
His name is Muhammad Bin Idris.
Bismillahirahmanirahim. Alhamdulillah Ustaz Zahid made his sharing on 27th September on Imam Shaafi’ee regardless. Recently, on last Tuesday, 24th September, Ustaz Zahid became a father to her first daughter. May Allah blessed his family with rizq and happiness. Ameen.
Brother Qayyum shared some of Imam Syafiee life time.
Imam Syafiee was born in 150H at Egypt after Imam Maliki passed away on the same year. At 7, Imam Syafiee memorized the Qur’an and at 15, he became the Mufti giving fatwas based on his vast knowledge on The Qur’an, hadith and his impeccable literacy. SubhanaAllah! Amazing isn’t it?
What did we do when we were 7? 15? (Rhetorical question there)
Imam Syafiee was brought up in poverty and little can he afford a Qur’an for his own reading, understanding and memorising. How did he memorized without the Qur’an? Here’s the story..
Imam Syafiee was sent to work with the Bedouin from the Huzal tribe to earn a living for his family at a very young age. During his time working with those Bedouin, he learned Arabic Fusha (pure Arabic language). No slang used in speaking. As time passed, Imam Syafiee became the youngest of all who is a good literate and good speaker as well. SubhanaAllah! Allah gave intelligence to him at such a young age!
He also learned horse riding and archery with the Huzal tribe. He even writes poetry! (The Arabs back then write poetry to earn a living)
Another amazing thing he did given his vast knowledge at such a young age was that, at 13, he took over his Syeikh’s class when his Syeikh was absent. SubhanaAllah!
Imam Syafiee travelled from Mecca to Madinah to meet Imam Malik to seek knowledge as he was given the amanah to become Mufti. There wasn’t special welcoming and celebration upon his arrival. People of Madinah do not know he was the Mufti yet.
One characteristic of Imam Syafiee is that he never believe that his opinion or belief is always right. He believes that if there’s somebody who has a better opinion on something regardless on Fiqh, Tauheed or other non-religious matter, he will accept their point. Never do he feel proud of his appointment being the Mufti at 15 years old or his vast Islamic knowledge. Now, I summed up the Intellectual session 4 with the quote below.
"We blame our time though we are to blame. No fault has time but only us. We scold the time for all the shame. Did it have tongue, it would scold us instead" - Imam Syafiee
