NYPMSN Sharing Session

Date: 27 April 2013
Sharing Session Led By: Brother Faris & Brother Asyraf
Topic: Balancing the Dunya & Akhirah (Moderation)

Here is what we've shared:

  • Why do we need to be Moderate?
  • Prohibition on being excessive in our deen.
  • 3 type of examples on how to be Moderate:
  1. Moderation in Worshipping Allah (Ibadah)
  2. Moderation in Living in this World
  3. Moderation in Entertainment

Why do we need to be Moderate?
What is mean by Balancing Dunya & Akhirah? It means being moderate in everything that we do, be it in doing Ibadah or Worldly Matter.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately. . . Always adopt a middle, moderate, regular course, whereby you will reach your target (of paradise)." [Bukhari]

Prohibition on being Excessive.

“O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth …“ [Quran, Surah an-Nisa’: 171]

Allah says, "We did not send down the Qur'an to you to make you miserable."
[Quran, Surah Taha: 2]

and the Almighty says, "..Allah desires ease for you; He does not desire difficulty for you." [Quran, Surah al-Baqarah: 185]

Narrated by Abu Huraira r.a,  that the Prophet s.a.w said, “Your actions alone will not save any of you.” They asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, not even you?’ He replied, “Not even me, unless Allah were to envelop me in His mercy. Be firm; steadfast and balanced; and journey[to Allah] in the beginning of the day, the end of the day, and a portion of the latter part of the night. Moderation, moderation! Through this will you attain your goal!” [Bukhari]

Excessiveness give Negative Impact:

Hammam reported: Hudhaifa, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “O townspeople, remain upright and you have taken a great lead, but if you swerve right or left then you will fall into extreme misguidance.” [Bukhari]

Narrated by Abu Huraira, The Prophet said, "religion is very easy and whoever overburdens himself in his religion will not be able to continue in that way. So you should not be extremists, but try to be near to perfection and receive the good tidings that you will be rewarded; and gain strength by worshipping in the mornings, the nights." [Bukhari]

Try our best in being Moderate:

Narrated 'Aisha: The Prophet was asked, "What deeds are loved most by Allah?" He said, "The most regular constant deeds even though they may be few." He added, 'Don't take upon yourselves, except the deeds which are within your ability."  [Bukhari]

3 Types of Examples on How to be Moderate:

   1. Moderation in Ibadah
Example of being Excessive:

Narrated by Abdullah bin Amr bin Al Aas, Allah's Apostle said to me, "O Abdullah! Have I not been informed that you fast during the day and offer prayers all the night." Abdullah replied, "Yes, O Allah's Apostle!" The Prophet said, "Don't do that; fast for few days and then give it up for few days, offer prayers and also sleep at night, as your body has a right on you, and your wife has a right on you, and your guest has a right on you. And it is sufficient for you to fast three days in a month, as the reward of a good deed is multiplied ten times, so it will be like fasting throughout the year." I insisted (on fasting) and so I was given a hard instruction. I said, "O Allah's Apostle! I have power." The Prophet said, "Fast like the fasting of the Prophet David (Daud, AS) and do not fast more than that." I said, "How was the fasting of the Prophet of Allah, David? (Daud)" He said, "Half of the year," (i.e. he used to fast on every alternate day). Afterwards when Abdullah became old, he used to say, "It would have been better for me if I had accepted the permission of the Prophet (which he gave me i.e. to fast only three days a month)." [Bukhari]

Example on being Moderate:

Abu 'Abdullah Jabir ibn Samura said, "I used to pray the prayers with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his prayer was of medium length and his khutba was of medium length." [Muslim]

Narrated 'Aisha: The Prophet was asked, "What deeds are loved most by Allah?" He said, "The most regular constant deeds even though they may be few." He added, 'Don't take upon yourselves, except the deeds which are within your ability."  [Bukhari]

   2. Moderation in Living in this World

      a) Moderation in Seeking Provision

“And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.” [Surah At-Talaq: 3]

"Allah extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. And they rejoice in the worldly life, while the worldly life is not, compared to the Hereafter, except [brief] enjoyment." [Surah ar-Rad: 26]

When seeking provision, or seeking knowledge, do not be too obsessive in doing so. By doing so, we may slowly became too attracted to this world, forgetting the hereafter. We just had to "Learn, Work Hard, Make Du'a, then Leave the Rest to Allah (Tawakkal)" for everything that happened is with Allah's will.

      b) Moderation taking Food

“O children of Adam, take your adornment to every mosque. Eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess.” [Sûrah al-A`râf: 31]

On the authority of Al-Miqdaam ibn Maadiy-Karib who said: I heard the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: “No human ever filled a vessel worse than the stomach. Sufficient for any son of Adam are some morsels to keep his back straight. But if it must be, then 1/3 for his food, 1/3 for his drink and 1/3 for his breath.”
[Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasaa'I, Ibn Majah – Hadith sahih]

Eating too much food will also make us become lazy. From laziness can lead to many unproductive activities, and especially affecting our Ibadah(in terms of concentration and willingness to do it).

      c) Moderation in Laughing

It is narrated with a sound chain of transmission that our Beloved Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Do not laugh too much, for verily excessive laughter kills the heart.”
[Bukhari, Adab al-Mufrad; Sunan Tirmidhi; Sunan Ibn Maja; Musnad Ahmad]

By kills the heart, it meant effect spiritually. Imam Munawi(16th century Scholar) said “Excessive laughter and excitement regarding worldly affairs is a lethal poison that flows in one’s veins and removes from the heart fear [of divine punishment], sadness [over one’s sins], and remembrance of death and the terrors of the Day of Arising; this, then, is the death of the heart”

      d) Moderation in Loving and Hating

Muhammad ibn Sirin said: Abu Huraira reported (and I think he attributed it to the Prophet, peace be upon him), “Love your beloved easily, perhaps he will become hated to you someday; and hate whom you hate easily, perhaps he will become your beloved someday.”
[Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Book 25, Number 1997, Grade: Hasan]

      e) Moderation in Giving Sermon

Shaqiq reported that 'Abdullah used to give us sermon on every Thursday. A person said: Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, we love your talk and so we yearn (to listen to you) and earnestly desire that you should deliver us lecture every day. Thereupon he said: There is nothing to hinder me in giving you talk (every day) but the fact that you may be bored. Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) did not deliver sermons on certain days (fearing that we might be bored).
[Muslim no. 6777]

We can take this hadith as a lesson. Don’t force ourselves to go to Syarahan or Islamic talk every day. The best is every few days or every week at the very least, so that it will not be bored to us.
(#NOTE#: Seeking Religious Knowledge, Madrasah, and hearing Lectures, Sermons, is two DIFFERENT thing.)

   3. Moderation in Entertainment

Entertainment is vast. It something that we cannot discuss much, because of the many different views by the Scholars. It is our individual responsibility to keep in mind to control ourselves when having entertainment.

“Berhibur tiada salahnya, kerna hiburan itu indah.
Hanya pabila salah memilihnya, Membuat kita jadi bersalah…”
[ Raihan, Album: Demi Masa, Title: Mari Berhibur]

However, we do know that entertainment that is prohibited is such that contain immoral acts[drinking, gambling etc], making ourselves forgetting/procastinating/careless of our obligations(prayers), having increase in desire for this world, or things that make you further away from Allah.

----------------------------------------

Apologies! I guess that was not a summary eh? Haha. Nevertheless, hopefully, in-sya'Allah, all of us can learn a thing or two and gain benefits from this summary.(If want to know more, better come Sharing Session horr..)

To end this summary, there's a quote taken from suhaibwebb.com

“Some of things in our life is our of control(demanding job or work), but we must remember there are many things in our control.”

"By time, Indeed, mankind is in loss, Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience." [Surah al-‘Asr]

May Allah reward all of you for taking your time to read this. (:
